Salt Spring Island
Salt Spring Island is the largest of the numerous Gulf Islands located in the Straight of Georgia which separates Vancouver on the mainland and Victoria on Vancouver Island. Measuring approximately 27 Km long by 13 Km wide, Salt Spring enjoys the most temperate climate in Canada--warm dry summers and mild green winters.
The seaside village of Ganges serves as the commercial and social centre for the island's 9,200 permanent residents. A large arts community thrives on Salt Spring as is evident by the numerous crafts available in many shops and galleries. Many artisans open their studios to the public. The local cinema shows two current movies each week. Good quality restaurants can be found in Ganges as well as in nearby Vesuvius Bay and Fulford Harbour.
In addition to being a tranquil oasis to read and relax, Salt Spring also offers numerous diversions such as swimming, fishing, walking, hiking, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, golfing and hiking. Between late Spring and early Fall, the famous Saturday market flourishes with a wide variety of crafts, produce and food on display.
Gay Life
The people of Salt Spring are talented, hospitable, diverse and, above all, tolerant. Who you sleep with is irrelevant. Although the population is relatively small, a significant (and growing) number of gay men and lesbians live on the Island. There are no bars or restaurants that cater exclusively to gays and lesbians.
How to get here
Salt Spring can be reached by B.C. Ferries from Vancouver and Victoria, by float plane from Vancouver airport and harbour and by ferry via Victoria from three different locations in Washington State.
