"What is it like to be  lesbian or gay in the Yukon?"

links links

As a gay male raised and living in the Yukon some of the things I often hear are:

Q-How can you live in that cold?
A- Cold winters are relative; we have warmer winters than many of the other places in southern Canada. Whitehorse is strongly influenced by the Pacific Ocean.  The summers are wonderful with the midnight sun and for outdoor enthusiasts this is it, without the hoards of crowds.

Q-How do you meet other Men?
A- The same way as anybody else I suppose.  Those that are in relationships connect the single ones, people meet at the dances and GALA socials.  The women in our community are also great at introductions and there are a couple gay friendly bars and cafes.

Q - What's the political environment in Yukon?
A- The government here is currently NDP, it is well known for it's  gay friendly policies.  Yukon gays and lesbians have been protected from discrimination for about 15 years.  In the last election it did get a bit scary with the reform coming in a close second. [NOTE: Since this was written the Liberals and then the Yukon Party have taken over the government.] There is a redneck element in Yukon, but the good part about them is they are easier to pick out than we are!

I will post and answer any other questions you may have.

The webmistress has her say....

Since I'm the only bi female in GALA (at the moment) I get to write this by default. I've only been living here since July '01 so I'm not really the best judge of what it's like to be bi and (mostly) out in Whitehorse. But, what the hey, we've gotta put something on this page. :)

I will say that so far I have had no trouble here. Everyone in GALA has been quite friendly and welcoming. I haven't gotten any of the "You're not bi, you're just confused" or "You bisexuals are traitors to the gay community!" comments that many bi folk have experienced in other LGBT communities. Even my family has been made to feel welcome, as nuclear as it is.

As far as the general community goes most people have a 'live and let live' attitude. After all, there are many small communities of alternative lifestyle proponents living up here. I wear my rainbow pride button openly and the ones who actually know what it means haven't blinked an eye. Others LGBT folk have mentioned the occasional a**holes as always, but I seem to have missed them to date.

I can't really say anything about the dating scene since I'm not dating at the moment - not much call for bi women with a husband and kids. LOL
