The
Lesbian, Bisexual, and Gay Pride Committee of Regina is a non-profit,
volunteer run agency that addresses the social and health concerns
of the Regina gay and lesbian community through special events, advocacy
and partnerships with other agencies. Originally formed in the early
eighties, the Committee was revitalized in 1998. Many valuable services
have already been provided to the citizens of Regina, including the
"25 Lives: Out and Proud" art show, and Halloween and Valentine's
dances.
In July 1998 and June 1999, the Pride Committee organized week-long
celebrations for "International Lesbian and Gay Pride Week."
Events included art shows, a family day in the park, a coming out
party, workshops on health and wellness, the Smith Street Reunion,
dances, and the annual Pride Awards with the participation of both
civic and provincial politicians. In 1999, the Pride Week kick-off
happened in style, with a Rainbow Ribbon Ceremony on the Scarth Street
Mall. Almost 150 people attended the 1999 opening, to help celebrate
receiving the City of Regina's Proclamation of Lesbian, Bisexual,
and Gay Pride Week.
Regina's
Lesbian and Gay Pride Week has also been an opportunity for all
community groups to organize events to celebrate Pride. Many events
have taken place, including the Lavender Club women's dance, Dignity
Regina's potluck, GLCR's "Heaven or Las Vegas," and the
Inside/Out Youth Group's potluck picnic.
The
year 2000 saw Regina hold the first annual Saskatchewan Pride Parade.
Over 350 people from across Saskatchewan participated. Saskatchewan
Folk Singer, Heather Bishop also received the Lifetime Achievement
Award for her work in Regina's gay, lesbian and bisexual community.
June
2001 was officially declared Saskatchewan Pride Day by the province.
Over 100 people from Regina traveled up to Saskatoon join others
from all over the province in the 2nd Annual Saskatchewan Pride
Parade.
Pride
week 2002 will take place June 16-22
