Show Tune Showdown 2007
While it might have been 14 months, Show Tune Showdown is still an annual event. On January 27, 2007, defending champions Orpheus Musical Theatre welcomed a returning team from the Ottawa School of Speech & Drama (OSSD) and new contenders from the Zucchini Grotto Theatre Company to Bronson Centre.
The three teams faced off in front of a formidable panel of judges – CBC Radio’s Kathleen Petty, Ottawa Chamber Music Festival founder Julian Armour, and acclaimed jazz singer Kellylee Evans – and over 500 enthusiastic audience members.
Tone Cluster added a new wrinkle to their opening number, “Can’t Stop the Beat” from Hairspray, with a band and dancers, from OSSD and the competitors stepped up their performers to match an impressive opener from their host choir.
In the end, the fledgling Zucchini Grotto team took the 2007 title, and even got a little help from a courageous audience member who took the stage to sing “Stranger in Paradise” from Kismet.
