Movie: The Statement
Description:
The latest incarnation of the talented Mr. Michael Caine finds himself playing a
retired French policeman who murdered seven Jews near the end of WWII, and who
suddenly finds himself on the run from someone who has tried to kill him. Not to
mention a French judge (Tilda Swinton) and her army colonel aide (Jeremy
Northam), who are on the trail of French war criminals. Caine's gift is to
humanize his characters, so that even here, while we're drawn in by the
suspenseful plot, we're almost drawn in as well by the man at the centre of it.
It's a tough role, since he's basically a rat out to save his skin, by any means
necessary.
And that means calling on his network of religious fellow travellers. There's a
lot of complexity here for screenwriter Ronald Harwood (The Pianist) to mine. And
a lot of men in high places that might be exposed. With Charlotte Rampling, Alan
Bates, Ciarán Hinds,
John Neville, Matt Craven, Edward Petherbridge. (Canada 2003) 120 min.
