New Year's Day Lunch-Launch of 2003
Wednesday, January 1, 2003
When I made the reservation at the Peartree in early December, I asked for the beautiful solarium at the back of the restaurant. Last year's New Year's Day lunch had approximately 25 guests in attendance, so I figured that we'd have the same number, more or less. Well, "more"... and more, and more, and MORE was what we got this time around. At first, a trickle of RSVPs, and then a moderately bubbly stream, and then a roaring Niagara, and soon I realized (with apologies to Roy Scheider in Jaws), "We're gonna need a bigger boat." When all were present and accounted for, 50 (fifty!!) rowdy revellers had taken over the Peartree for a record-setting New Year's Day party. Lovely Co-Host Angela maintained order and soon, all were seated and the lunch was under way.

The very capable and efficient Peartree staff are used to dealing with large groups of WRIBlettes by now, because our Singles Dinners regularly have 40 or more in attendance, so they kept everything going smoothly, and before we knew it, food, scrumptious food had arrived and folks got down to some serious chowing-down. Yum!

Toastmaster Tin used her speechmaking skills to get us swiftly through the business of the day. Guests had been supplied with small bottles of bubbles, and Tin organized our "50-Bubble Salute" to 2003.

Chair Susan McLachlin led the group in a hearty and more-or-less harmonious bellowing of "Happy Birthday" to poor unsuspecting Tin, and then we got on to the best part of the event -- PRIZES! Congratulations to Jo-Ann L. and Sara M., who won 2003 Calendars.

Thank-you to all our guests for joining us at this splendid and exhilarating launch of the New Year. Here's wishing everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous 2003! - Susan Cox WRIB Website Coordinator

May 31st Singles Dinner - Ever wonder where the singles hang out these days? Well at least 50 of the lovely ladies gathered at the Peartree before the WRIB Spring dance to get into the mood, meet and greet before the dance. Did you know that 2/3 of our membership is single or at least not co-habitating. So if you are looking for a great enviroment to meet new women why not get in on the fun of one our singles dinners or brunches. Games, prizes, great conversation - can't think of a better way to start the night.

And a very special thank you to our Queen of the Singles - Sue Cox, for hosting a great year of singles events - and by the way she's no longer single - *wink* - you never know what might happen at a singles event.

May 31st - All welcome dinner - another capacity crowd gathered just up the street from the singles, to dine on a fabby 3 course meal all for one low price. The meal and merryment were so much fun we had to wrestle these gals to sacrifice a few tables so we could set up for the dance. Once we begged nicely - we did get a few to move into the pool room so we could get things underway for the start of a hot and steamy night of dancing. Thanks to Vona for hosting.

WRIB's Spring dance May 31st - WRIB SELLS OUT

More than 200 women poured through the doors to start this years dance season. Immediately following 2 of the most successful WRIB dinners where 100 plus members and guests wined and dined each other, they all decicded to work of the nights meal with a little strenuous dancing. DJ Deb Parent had the crowd going with her great selection of tunes and her skill f or reading the mood of the dance floor. By 10;30 we realized we had run out of tickets, but the women just kept on coming. ; The more the merrier was the mood of the night. The street was filled with women needing to cool down and inside the dance floor just got more packed and everyone a little closer. Two of our great board members loaned their bodies to the cause and started an interesting hour of 50/50 ticket sales (not sure if the action on the dance floor or with the 50/50 gals was hotter.) What a night of great dancing.

June 21st - Pre-Pride Dance

New venue, new DJ. DJ Tammy lead the WRIB dancers as young and wiser took to the dance floor at the Primrose to dance through the decades of their favourite tunes. A little something for everyone. The old knees on my young body were hardly a challenge for the gals of the 50's and 60's as they twisted, jived and strolled their way into the decad e of disco. A little bit of country and lots of slooooow tunes graced the night and kept the dance floor filled.

Saturday October 5 - WRIB's first ever car rally was a roaring success! 29 participants filled
twelve cars to drive around the smaller neighbourhoods and countryside
northwest of Toronto. Along the way, questions were answered and items were
gathered. All had a good time, with many participants commenting very
positively on the event and looking forward to next year. The organizers
would like to thank everyone for their participation and for their feedback
in order that we can make next years rally an even greater success.

Results of the rally are posted below. Scoring was as follows:

1 point awarded for each of the 17 items on the scavenger hunt. If all 17
items were found, then a bonus of 3 points was added (because one item was
quite tricky).

1 point awarded for each of the 40 questions along the route.

Each car began with 10 points for kilometres, and then 1 point was deducted
for every 1 kilometre less or greater than the total route distance of 122
km.

1 point deducted, to a maximum of 10 points, for every 1 minute over the
2nd place arrival time (we used the 2nd place time because first place was a
full 30 minutes ahead of all the others).

Although participants were told in an advance e-mail that the winners would
be judged based on a combination of points in each category, we forgot to
remind participants prior to the event. For this, we apologize and will
ensure to clarify the situation more next year. As well, next year we will
consider prizes for the best in each category as well as total score.

1st place: Susan Holder and Sarah, with a total of 60 points.
